We are now well into the rainy season but the rains have come quite gradually, sometimes really heavy for short periods, some days with mixed clear and cloudy skies with no rain during the day, thunder storms with lightening and rain some nights. By July 4th the Belize River was still a light olive color and at normal dry season levels. Small to medium Tarpon have been teasing us several times a day by rolling right in front of the lodge.

July 13 turned out to be a very breezy day with winds from the southeast at 10-20 knots. Raul had two fishing guests off a cruise ship for the day. Flats fishing did not look too practical so he went to the Sibun River. Though the river was quite muddy he found small Tarpon rolling and feeding. Using both fly and spinning gear the two anglers landed ten Tarpon, but hooked and jumped many more for a pretty decent day, despite the winds.

Around the end of June one angler had some great Tarpon action for a pretty good day at Black Creek but the next day the same areas were very slow. Some bigger fish rolling at the “Falls” kept up his interest and the scenery and wild life helped to make up a good day

Other anglers fishing from the lodge had pretty decent action from Snook, small Tarpon, and Bones. A few Permit were chased but weather conditions were just not right for Permit and it was very difficult to see them. Some Permit showed up just under the bow but saw the boat and took off before the guide or angler saw them.

Some big Tarpon in the 80-100 pound size were regularly found in the bay just outside the mouth of the river, but like Permit were difficult to see within casting distance. The bay was still clear enough to hold the big Tarpon there. Some other big Tarpon were a little easier to reach in the deeper channels in clear water but seemed to be pretty picky about taking a fly of plug.

Most days have been brilliantly sunny, with some scattered clouds in the area of BRL.

By now there has been enough rain in western Belize that the river has slowly turned muddy and has risen slightly, but still not over the dock.

The Flats, Cayes and Channels are in good shape for Permit, Bones, Snook and small Tarpon and these areas should be productive through the rest of the year. The resident big Tarpon are of course still here but require a little more hunting for them.

For the rest of this year BRL has some very good discounts available. For the price sensitive traveler, Belize River Lodge is again offering a great opportunity and at a discounted rate for those looking to fish the beautiful Flats of Central Belize from now thru December.
