A mystical cave tour that begins after an approximate 45 minute hike through the lush subtropical forest of the Tapir Mountain Reserve in Western Belize. Within the cave you will see sparkling stalactites and stalagmites and magnificent Mayan artifacts which reveal the fascinating world of the Maya.
Ancient Maya believed in that caves were home of the gods and the entrance to the ever mysterious underworld: Xibalba (chee-bal-ba) translating to “Place of Fear”. You will see a vast array of artifacts including skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware. Some of the cave formations were modified to create altars for offerings, while others to create silhouettes of faces and animals or to project a shadow images into the cave. ATM Cave is well-known for the “The Crystal Maiden”, a skeleton of what is now believed to be a 17-year-old boy, who was sacrifice to the Mayan rain god Chac.
