After many years of untypical March’s, Mike said that March has been a historically typical month with winds, so many anglers have been fishing the rivers and out of the wind areas of the mangrove cayes and flats. Below is Mike’s fishing update.

February was a long dry month with very little rain and two cold fronts at 65 degrees. February and early March were also quite windy. The rivers have been green and clear since early January providing great back up for windy days on the flats.

Snook fishing was excellent on the rivers as well as on many of the protected mangrove Cayes and bays. One angler landed more than a dozen Snook ranging in size from three to twenty pounds. Most Snook were released however a few were kept for the table and some anglers enjoyed eating Snook for the first time.

Bonefish were caught in protected flats and small to medium tarpon were often caught in the same areas as the Snook. One grand slam of tarpon, bonefish and Snook were caught by a very experienced and skilled lady angler despite windy conditions that day.

Great birding experiences were enjoyed by several serious anglers/birders. Day tours to ancient Mayan sites, a bird sanctuary and the Belize Zoo were thoroughly enjoyed by several anglers. River fishers were also complemented by sightings of Jabirus on a nest, crocodiles, howler monkeys and iguanas.
