BELIZE RIVER LODGE – FISHING REPORT

Old Lady And The Sea. Prominently mounted on the mahogany wall at the lodge since the early 1960s is a 48 inch Sawfish saw. It is estimated that the body of that sawfish was about twelve feet long. With the help of anglers returning to the lodge it was caught at the mouth of the Belize River by a little old lady, fishing with a hand line, from an eight foot dugout.
The heavy rains have stopped, the dry season is here, mango trees are in full bloom, and the Belize River in front of the lodge is now olive green. These “sings” are all a little late this year but sure indicators that the Big Migratory Tarpon will be here any day now. Will you be here to get your first Tarpon over 100 pounds, or a bigger one than last time?
The week preceding the last full moon produced some very good Snook fishing. A single angler caught 27 Snook ranging in size from four to ten pounds, ten Bones, three small Tarpon and ten Jacks, plus Snappers, Cudas and some Bay Snook.
Over the full moon and the following week other anglers landed 3-5 Snook, 5-10 Bones, several Snappers and Jacks each day. The biggest Jack was about fifteen pounds.
Most anglers jumped several baby Tarpon every day. The best day for a single angler was 22 jumped and 9 boated ranging in size from four to about thirty pounds. The biggest one hooked, jumped and lost was about seventy five pounds. “A most exciting experience” said the angler.
Permit fishing has been tougher than usual because of rainy and heavy overcast conditions. Many large schools were seen and cast to but only a few Permit were hooked by anglers willing to brace those adverse conditions.
Barracudas and Jacks of all sizes provided great action on slow days. Again in a few weeks time we will be working with Bonefish and Tarpon Trust to tag some big Tarpon with satellite tags.
Again, anglers enjoyed their saltwater fishing experience with Belize River Lodge, some as a first flats fishing trip and many being return guests.
