August 24, 2010 Fishing Report
Terry and Beth braved a rainy day with thunder storms and went after the big tarpon with a Red & White YoZuri. Terry fought and landed a 100 pounder for 2-1/2 hours, counting an almost unbelievable 15 jumps. Twice the fish jumped going directly away from the boat. On the second jump a streak of lightning flashed right in line with the tarpon. Both anglers and guide said the big fish immediately turned back toward the boat. Never knew a big tarpon would be scared by lightning.
Linda and Beth decided they would like a ladies only day out and a little friendly competition. with the guys. Using spinning gear with 30 pound Power Pro line and a 5-1/2″ Blue & White YoZuri ,they told the guide they intended to win this one. They started with a 50# tarpon on but not quite to the boat. Then a bigger one for just a couple beautiful jumps. The next fish was estimated by the guide to be over 80 pounds, but little did they expect this one to give them such a work out. The big fish made five spectacular jumps as if to convince them they really had a winner. Several times the ladies exchanged the rod to rest their arms while the fish continued to try to beat each one of them separately. The guide kept advising them to put on more pressure but they said they could not try any harder. After a full 4-1/2 hours this tarpon got his tail on the line and broke off. Back at the lodge the men conceded.
Terry and Curt had a 60 pound tarpon on for 40 minutes; this fish never jumped even once. Line broke just above the reel. Mac and Mary landed a tough fighting 15 pound Jack Crevelle, got a few others to the boat, 7 bones, hits and jumps from several small tarpon, a large snapper, cudas and a 14 pound snook.
Jeff and Megg fought a 100 pound tarpon for 45 minutes before breaking it off. Another 100 pounder made only one jump and was gone. They landed a 6 pound Cubera snapper, a big barracuda, small snook, cast to permit but no hook-ups, but lots of bones on a fly. Megg’s highlight was her first bonefish, on a fly. She loved the very attentive Lodge staff.
Curt and Linda brought a 60 pound tarpon to the boat with light spin gear, jumped about a dozen little tarpon in the river and landed some small snappers. John and Joni jumped an 80 pound tarpon, caught Cubera snappers, snook and other snappers.
During the week, some of the ladies and a few of the gentleman scheduled a break from fishing to eco-tour. Tours to the Belize Zoo, the Museum of Belize, Belize City, Cave tubing and Zip lining, Altun Ha Maya site, snorkeling the reef and a day trip to San Pedro rounded out the week.
