Hello to all of our friends,
We hope that 2023 is going well for you. With every new year, Mike and I can count the number of years at Belize River Lodge, as we purchased the lodge in 1985 but hosted our first groups in January 1986 – some Virginian gentlemen anglers and some rowdy Texans (self-named), what a week it was. So this January, we have been the owners and your hosts at Belize River Lodge for 37 years. We managed the lodge from 1980 to 1982, 43 years ago but even more amazingly, the Lodge has been standing here on the banks of the Belize Olde River, your home away from home, since 1960. So Belize River Lodge has been lodging anglers from around the world for 63 years, making us historically the first fishing lodge in Belize.
We have of course made necessary upgrades (boats, engines etc), while trying to keep the “feel” of the Lodge present. Our mahogany walls have only gotten richer in color over the years, even as we added air conditioning to guest rooms and the main Lodge living and dining room. Our meals have moved from a more traditional bland “English” fare to a tasty mix of flavors from peoples around Belize – Creole, American, Garifuna, Lebanese, etc; giving you tempting meals to experience.
However, while sitting at our prized mahogany dinner tables, we have left the Colonial “bell” system in place. We have been asked over the years, how the wait-staff like the bell system, and they like it. The ladies in the kitchen (cooks and waitresses) get to clean up; and not hover around the table as you relax and enjoy your meal. They check through the kitchen door window to see if anything needs to be refilled. Then when they hear the bell, the ladies come and clear the table, and bring your homemade dessert and coffee. The bell system allows for the ladies to finish their night much earlier than if they were on stand-by at the tables. Needless to say, they like the Colonial Bell system. We have tried to blend the old-fashioned ways with an updated modernization that works for us at Belize River Lodge.
January and February is tradeshow time, and Misha and Morgan, my granddaughter, will be at the Edison, NJ; Atlanta, GA and Denver, CO Flyfishing Shows. If you are in the areas, stop by and say hello and see some of the packages that we offer – not only fishing but combo fishing and touring. We are getting many non-fishing family members joining for some of our eco-adventure tours in recent years.
We look forward to catching up and visiting with you and letting us remind you of our updated old-fashioned hospitality.
Warm regards,
Marguerite
