May 14 – June 21, 2021
May 14: 100 pound Tarpon landed by Kris.
May 16: Bob had a very good day and landed a Grand Slam – a 50 pound Tarpon, a 5 pound Bonefish and a 2 pound Snook.
May 18: Another Grand Slam of a 70 pound Tarpon, a 2 pound Bonefish and a 4 pound Snook was landed by George S. George has been fishing with BRL since 2013 and was completely bummed that he had to miss his 2020 trip and thoroughly enjoyed his 2021 visit. George said “he did not want to leave because he was having such a great time!”
June 4 was a “Permity” day and Kyle landed a 5 pound and 15 pound Permit.
At the end of May, Mick finished his 36th fishing trip to Belize River Lodge. Over the years, Mick has landed 24 Grand Slams and has registered 23 of the 24 with IGFA. The IGFA referred to him as the “Collosus of the Grand Slam”. One day he got three Grand Slams in the same day. Another day he got a Grand Slam on the same fly, including a Bone, with an 80 pound shock tippet.
This past week, on his 36th trip, Mick landed Snook, Tarpon, Bones, Snappers, jumped several Tarpon in the 25-30 pound range and cast to several big Tarpon. Mick has mentioned for all the great fishing days, he has paid his dues – one trip to BRL, the winds blew, the rains poured and Mick landed one Bonefish all week. But that did not deter him, as his next trip was the triple Grand Slam trip. Fishing is a sport of optimism.
Mick is a retired college professor and is now a famous Blues singer/guitarist. He comes to BRL for “friends, fish and food and for the best fishing areas for someone who loves fishing”. He is a fan of the natural world and loves to hear and see the Oropendulas and Howler Monkeys at the Lodge.
Note: Mick is the super guy who wrote our BRL song “On the Flats” about Crazy Charlie and his rubber legged friend visiting a lodge run by Mike and Marguerite.
In spite of many days of 15-25 mph windy days, guests at BRL fished the rivers for Tarpon and Snook and a few guests landed Bay Snook.
Guests at the Long Caye Outpost enjoyed fishing for Bones, Permit, Snook and Tarpon in the lee of the many mangrove Cayes in the area. Kris got his first 100 pound Tarpon and jumped several others in the 20 pound range and also a big Snook. Another group at LC Outpost caught 4 Tarpon, 25 Bones, a Snook and ten different species of fish.
In May, we had 2 fathers and their sons fishing with us. This trip, being Alex’s very first fly fishing trip where he caught “tarpon fever” and is now hooked on fly fishing. Mike C got his first Tarpon, a 25 pounder. Hunter caught a 50 pound Tarpon, some Bones and had some good shots at Permit. Mark said his group “had an awesome time with good fishing, excellent staff, delicious food and beautiful white sand and coconut trees at Long Caye Outpost”.
May was a very windy month, probably windier than usual, but our three rivers and mangrove Cayes supplied a lot of protection for fly casting and catching all our popular species.
June 2020: Val and Ron again hosted a group of eight anglers fishing here for six days starting June 17th. Ron landed three Tarpon of 107, 75 and 65 pounds, Val landed the biggest Tarpon of 120 pounds and also a 57 pound’er. They will receive BRL Club Certificates for the 75, 107 and 120 pounders.
Val and Ron were very happy with the tarpon they landed; and especially the way their trip played out as other members of their party landed several smaller Tarpon and lost a few big ones. The group also landed quite a few very nice Snook, many Bones, Jacks, Cudas and one Ladyfish.
Most anglers here in May and June have promised to return to BRL again and Mick has already booked to return in September.
Warm regards,
Mike

I would like to finish this report with John & Jacquie D’s email after their trip:
Tuesday, June 22, 2021 ~ Subject: Thanks for a great trip!
“Dear Mike, Marguerite, Misha, & Karen,
What a wonderful week! Thank you for your warm and gracious hospitality. Every day you treated us like family and we felt quite at home in your beautiful lodge. We appreciated your insights, not just regarding the fishing; but also for the local birds and wildlife. Walking the grounds felt like we were visiting a tropical arboretum with so many blooming flowers and trees. Your decades long commitment and dedication to conservation and ecotourism is inspiring!
Cheers and Blessings,
John & Jacquie D
