May went out like a lion, June came in on gentle cat’s feet.
The months of April and May this year were unusually breezy, with few calm days, but most of our fly fishing guests handled the strong winds quite well.
The guides elected to fish the Belize, Sibun and Manatee Rivers a bit more than usual when the winds were really too tough to fish the flats. The river fishing produced good numbers of small and medium Tarpon, Snook and Jacks.
Our primary fishing areas, though sometimes tough to fish because of the winds still produced very good action for Tarpon, Snook, Permit and Bonefish.
This May, most probably due to the windy conditions, there were only five Tarpon over 75 pounds actually boated; 1 at 75, 1 at 89, 1 at 103, 2 at 120 pounds. Many more were jumped, some on for less than a minute and many for about and hour before getting off, sometimes right next to the boat. The high winds made seeing and casting to these big fish difficult, especially on the open flats and channels. The big black Tarpon Snake produced the most action for Big Tarpon.
Lots of small Tarpon from 10-25 pounds were boated, both in the rivers and on the flats. Snook fishing near the flats and in the rivers was very productive with just about as many Snook caught as small Tarpon, the most common size about 5-6 pounds and a few pushing 12-15 pounds.
Despite the winds 8 Permit were landed, ranging from 4-1/2 to 20 pounds. The most productive permit fly was the Spawning Shrimp. Today’s Permit was caught by Sheila on a Pink Wiggle Jig with spinning gear.
Seven Inshore Grand Slams were also caught; Mick caught three and Frank landed two, and both Mick and Frank registered their Slams with IGFA.
Our BRL variety game fish species also included Tripletail, Cobia, Barracuda, Jack, Ladyfish, Cubera and a variety of other Snappers. You too can experience very good fishing in the coming months, but only if you are here.
Toward the end of May, we had a new first . . . Mike and Pedro landed a “tagged Bonefish”. The bonefish was tagged this March by Mick and Jose, who were helping us with our BTT research, and Mike was surprised when he saw the tag on his Bonefish.
