FISHING REPORT – Nov. 12, 2011

In late October Hurricane RINA threatened for a short while but bypassed Belize and died out in the Yucatan well north of us.   This season’s first but early cold front with cool 68 degree northerly winds influenced the hurricane but not the fishing.  Winds sometimes up to 20 knots from the north and then from the west-south-west temporarily messed up some of our open flats but the leeside flats and river were fishable and productive.  For most of October and the first week of November we had beautiful weather with several “glass calm” days.   Some highlights follow . . .

BIG TARPON:  While scarce during this period, only one of about 100 pounds took a big fly for just a few seconds.  However, fall is not known for the big tarpon in Central Belize, BRL guests are looking forward to the spring of 2012 for the large migratory tarpon.

SNOOK:  Three nice SNOOK were landed by one boat while two other boats landed 9.  Some  other Snook were on, just briefly, during a period of some fast action.

PERMIT:  About 25-75 Permit were seen and cast to in a two day period, only one was hooked but broke off because of too hard a hook set, none were caught.

GRAND SLAM:   Jay started out his week with a Tarpon, Snook and Bonefish Grand Slam on the first morning.  Snook are regularly targeted when someone wants a quick slam as Jay wanted for his film.

OTHER SPECIES caught during this time were, Cobia, Barracudas, Jacks, Cubera and other snappers and even a couple catfish.

FISHING/ARCHAEOLOGY TOURS:  Michael and Cindy enjoyed one of our custom fishing-archaeology-tour packages.  They fished from the lodge and from our Long Caye Island Resort and then enjoyed two days of tours.  The tours included Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, Altun Ha and Xunantunich ancient Maya sites, a Butterfly Farm and the Mennonite settlement at Spanish Lookout.  They promised to return to do more fishing and visit more Maya sites in 2012.
